Treatment for Dry Eye – Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)
If you suffer from dry eye, you are not alone. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 5 million Americans suffer from the condition. Dry eye can be caused by several things, including age, medications, and even prolonged screen time. While there are several treatments available to help alleviate the symptoms of dry eye, one of the most effective is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT).
What is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?
Marco Equinox Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive therapy that uses low-level red light energy and heat to help stimulate tear production and improve the health of the cells lining the inside of the eyelids. LLLT has been shown to be an effective treatment for dry eye, providing long-lasting relief for many patients, as it effectively treats meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis.
What can I expect during Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?
During a typical LLLT treatment session, you will sit or recline in a comfortable position and a special LED mask will be placed on your face. The mask will emit low-level light energy onto your closed eyelids. The light energy will penetrate the tissue and stimulate cells to produce more tears.
Most patients report feeling a sense of warmth during the treatment, but there is no pain or discomfort associated with LLLT. Each treatment session lasts approximately 15 minutes, and most patients require 3-4 sessions per week for optimal results.
