Signs That Your Child May Have a Vision Problem: What to Look Out For

Jul 1, 2023

As parents, we want the best for our children, including good vision. However, children may not always be aware that they have a vision problem, and they may think everyone sees the way that they do. This is why it’s important for parents to look out for signs that their child may have a vision problem. In this blog, we will discuss some common signs to watch out for. If you notice any of these signs, schedule an eye exam in Newton or Mooresville today.

1. Squinting or rubbing their eyes

If you notice your child squinting or rubbing their eyes frequently, it may be a sign of eye strain or fatigue. This can be caused by a refractive error like nearsightedness or farsightedness or by a more serious eye condition.

2. Frequent headaches or eye pain

Headaches and eye pain can also be signs of eye strain or fatigue. If your child is experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to have their vision checked to rule out any underlying issues.

3. Holding objects close to their face

If you notice your little one holding books or electronic devices too close to their face, they might be having trouble seeing objects at a distance. This is a sign of myopia (nearsightedness), a common condition that an eye doctor can diagnose and manage with eyeglasses or other vision treatments.

4. Avoiding activities that require good vision

If your child is avoiding activities like reading, drawing, or playing sports that require good vision, it could be a sign that they are having difficulty seeing.

5. Tilting their head or covering one eye

If your child tilts their head or covers one eye when looking at objects, it could be a sign of a refractive error or a more serious eye condition like amblyopia. An eye doctor can detect these issues during an eye exam and recommend the best treatment.

When to schedule a pediatric eye exam

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to schedule a pediatric eye exam for your child. Early detection and treatment of vision problems can help prevent long-term vision problems and improve your child’s quality of life.

During an eye exam, the optometrist will check for common vision problems and determine if your child needs glasses or other treatment. By scheduling regular check-ups, you can ensure that your child’s eyes are healthy and catch any issues before they become bigger problems.
